The first forty years
Our club’s history goes back as far as 1961 when the site was approved by the then Melville Road Board.
1963 saw the establishment of two greens, and the club’s membership consisted of 113 full members and 109 associate members (ladies).
1965 saw the erection of our clubhouse. In 1967 and 1971 two additional greens were added.
In 1983 the club became incorporated.
In 1996 Ladies became full members with voting rights.
From 2000 0nwards
The club replaced grass with carpet on B and C greens (2005) and D green (2008), retaining A green as grass.
In 2009 the club won the Bowls WA award as the outstanding Metropolitan Club of the Year. In 2011 we celebrated our 50th birthday.
2012 saw B green returned to grass, and now in 2021 we have two excellent grass greens (A and B) and one synthetic green (C).
This year (2021) we celebrate our sixtieth year on the site, and are making improvements to the clubhouse to improve the ambience and create a more friendly feel for members and visitors. We are about to sign a ten year lease with a possible extension for another eleven years.
Our club cat was with us for many years after being left behind when his owner died. This cat adopted the club and loved people – the more the merrier. Often seen strolling casually down the green in the middle of a pennant game, at the bar, in the club with a hundred or so people, enjoying a gala day or luncheon, and taking a front row seat when the Liberal Party was addressing the party faithful. Not a great bowler, but an excellent “mouser”. He was named Chairman Miaow by one member but more commonly was known as “Pussa”. RIP Pussa (aged 20 years).
